One view up and one down, both with a hint of dizziness. This one of several stunning staircases in Somerset House. If you look carefully, you can tell whether you’re at the top or the bottom by studying the railings – plain bars at the bottom, in the servants’a area, fancy swirly ones at the top – higher class quite literally.

Alright! How many steps are we talking about? Very photogenic staircase, and a great job!

Oh, now that is a tough question. I don’t know and can’t even say exactly how many floors. But I am planning to go back soon for a proper tour. I’ve been in the building a number of times for exhibitions and even a film out in the courtyard, but never really studied the architecture.
