Somehow spotted that I never replied to this. Tripod. Thick jacket, multiple layers, even a blanket! Not too long an exposure or you get star trails. Theses were ISO400, 10 seconds. But there may be better ways to do it. We had the lights 2 nights in September but missed the first ones 😦
There are not enough “loves” for this. I am hoping to get to Iceland next year in March or April. The fact that you saw this as early as September gives me hope that I might see it too. Either way I know Iceland itself will be spectacular.
