Here we are, on the final day of 2018, and the last day of Becky’s #timesquare challenge, so today’s images just have to be Times Square.
A giant Waterford crystal ball signifying New Year’s Day was first dropped at Times Square on December 31, 1907. This has formed the main New Year’s celebration in New York City since then; apart, that is, from a break during World War II, when the ball drop was replaced by a minute of silence, followed by a recording of church bells pealing.
A hundred years on, the crystal ball was replaced by a larger energy-efficient ball which has now taken over the New Year tumble.
