The man perched on top of the giant golden ball, in his plain white shirt and dark trousers, looks brave, or maybe foolish. But no panic required: he is a sculpture created by German artist Stephan Balkenhol in 2007.

The golden ball, Sphaera, stands 9 metres high in Kapitelplatz, close to the Dom.

Balkenhol is not known for explaining the meaning behind his works, so I’m left to assume that this man is standing on top of a Mozartkugel – a ball of marzipan coated in chocolate and wrapped in gold, and on sale everywhere in Salzburg!

I’m so glad he is still there! I saw him in 2010 and thought he may have been a temporary installation.

Yes. I was pleased to see he’s still there. He stands out well in a historic area. And thee are a few other pieces of his work that I’d love to see. I will have to investigate their locations.
