I’m a Fan of Greenery

One of Milan’s Vertical Forests

Bosco Verticale, Milan, December 2019

These vertical forests, designed by Stefano Boeri, opened in Milan in 2014. A few years on and the forests are thriving. In fact, there were some vertigo-immune gardeners hanging from ropes and pruning the greenery, when I visited in late 2019.

The two towers of greenery stand 116m and 85m high, and are hosts to 700 trees, over 20,000 different shrubs and plants, and bees, overflies and birds.

  1. These are great but if not accessible from the inside, I wouldn’t have one, as I couldn’t get out there to take care of them. I’m guessing a service takes care of them. I’d also like to be able to sit outside among the greenery, which wouldn’t happen. However, it’s a wonderful idea and great for nature as well as just mentally for people.

  2. It looks marvellous. But … yes, I have a but. The trees and shrubs, as I understand it, are on platforms that are only accessible from the outside. This makes for the good looks (uniform in some ways because the whole building is planned and maintained by the same gardeners) but is very work and technique intensive. If these platforms were more like conventional balconies the building itself wouldn’t look as good but the living conditions for the inhabitants might be better… having their own balconies to use. Of course, not everybody is a gardener, not everybody has the same tastes etc. This all said, of course, if we are talking apartments. If these are office buildings it’s different again.
