“I love this city, and always shall. I write about it. I dream about it. I walk its streets and see something new each day – traces of faded lettering on the stone, still legible, but just; some facade that I have walked past before and not noticed; an unregarded doorway…”
So wrote Alexander McCall Smith, sharing the delights of his adopted city, Edinburgh. I have come to share his admiration of this “city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas”. The changes of height, of weather, of age and history, mean there can be a surprise around any corner, and down any alley.
Here is a small collection of the varied views of the roofs and chimneys of Edinburgh.

Although I’ve visited Edinburgh only once, its probably my favorite city. I’m currently writing a blog about connections between my hometown and EH. The research is so much fun!

Oh I so adore your photos this week. I love the old gothic (I think that is what it is called) cathedral in your last photo. 😀

Oh, and how long did you have to wait for the lone figure??

Not long – that one is a popular route, it seems 🙂

Love the conical roof, and the last view down the snicket

Two of my faves ( I like the view over station roof to Calton Hill too). I love the writing on the conical roof, which matches McCall Smith’s words so well.

Yes, the barely visible, one of Anabel’s Ghost Signs, even!

So inviting! Edinburgh has been on my bucket list for ages. In wanting care for the environment I am choosing to avoid flying as much as possible, so I don’t think I’ll make it in this lifetime. In the meantime I greatly enjoy your photographs of this old city.

Let’s hope there are improvements that reduce impact of flying. I’m lucky that I can get to Edinburgh by train.

That would be cool, and how neat that you can get there by train.

And that last one exemplifies it all, Debs. Love it! 🙂 🙂

Yes Edinburgh is great for peeping down alleys and often finding great views.
