They are! But it’s a wonderful way to arrive from the airport. If with a group that’s what we do. And if only me, I try to treat myself with a goodbye water taxi to the airport.
In Rotterdam the taxis are cheap, and operate more like an on-demand bus. You choose where you are going to but the driver will wait till gets a fair number of people on board before he sets off.
Coming in by train is great too.
Still worth a taxi treat somewhere, but make it a fair distance to get the views back, just a taxi along the Grand Canal is no real difference to a water bus / ferry.

I always get to Venice by train and the ferry to where are staying.
