A windmill with a new life

This beauty sits on the National Trust property at Wicken Fen, where its spins us back to the time of a busy peat digging industry in the area.

Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire, March 2020

This traditional windmill is the last remaining of six wind pumps that used to drain the turf pits here in Cambridgeshire. Thankfully, it has been renovated and put back to use, but now doing the opposite of what it used to do. It used to remove water, and now it brings water in, pumping it up from a nearby ditch and onto Sedge Fen.

  1. ….peat digging … I wonder why that is not done anymore … Love the artsy looking windmill, and glad it is in operation! About your response about the restrictions to stay at home – yes, I feel for them. Live in the forest, so there is no house without land around it. Wished I could share it with the appartment dwellers that have no outside opportunity. Have heard form a few sides it will take around 5 months to resolve itself, but I hope the restriction to stay at home will be lifted before that.
