The cap at the top of the wind pump, is vital to the workings of the structure. With manual physical effort, the cap can be twisted to reposition the sails so that they catch the wind.

Nice photo! I grew up in Cambridge and this reminds me of many a school trip to Wicken Fen to walk the trails and look at the plants/insects all over.
