A prayer station at the Altar of the Persecuted, St Albans Cathedral, July 2020
This version of the Last Supper features Jamaican born model, Tafari Hinds, as Jesus Christ. It was painted by Lorna May Wadsworth in 2009 and the original hangs in St George’s Church, Nailsworth.
In late 2019, the work was relocated temporarily for display at an exhibition in Sheffield, and during the move the artist discovered that the work had been damaged at some time during its hanging at Nailsworth. Analysis of the damage revealed that Jesus had been shot by an air rifle, well positioned to hit him on the wound made by a Roman soldier’s blade when checking he was dead.
The print will be on display in St Albans until 31 October 2020.

Interesting. And the fact that it stops you in your tracks show how unusual a non white (Anglo-Saxon even) Jesus is. Not to mention the disciples.

Yes, I like the way she has added a good mix of race and colour. And, you’re right, even those of us who think we don’t base anything on skin colour have certain expectations that are hard to detect until something like this makes us stop and think.

yes, no problem with photos. It is a prayer station, and I wouldn’t want to intrude, but i was the only one there 🙂
