Snow moon

A full Snow Moon over St Albans, Hertfordshire, February 2021

There was no snow here to coincide with this stunning full moon, but Snow Moon is the name commonly given to the February moon. We have some great seasonal names for our moon, many of them going back to terms used by Native Americans who relied on the moon to tell them the time of year. This makes snow an obvious name, given that February usually sees very heavy snowfall in much of the United States. Other lunar names for February, include Groundhog Moon, Black Bear Moon and Hunger Moon.

Whichever name we choose, it gave a great show on the night of 26 February 2021, on its way to reaching its peak at about 08:00 GMT on 27 February.
