I’m a fan of the almost open sea

sea, tidal pool fading into sky

Tidal pool at Walpole Bay, Margate, Kent, July 2021

If you fancy a splash in a tidal pool, there are plenty around. Here are a few of the pools in the UK:

• Chapel Pool, Polperro

• Cleveden Marine Lake, North Somerset

• The Trinkie, Wick, Caithness

• North Berwick, East Lothian

• Priest’s Cove Pool, Cape Cornwall, Cornwall

• Bude, Summerleaze, Beach, Cornwall

• The Rock Pool, Westward Ho! Bideford, Devon

• Dancing Ledge, Swanage

• Shoalstone Pool, Brixham, Devon

And one of my favourites, just across the channel:

• Saint Malo, Brittany

    • At very high tide it vanishes, but at low tide the pool walls appear and people walk out along the wall to get into the deeper end of the pool. I was out for an early walk every morning, to avoid the heat, and it was a popular spot for a morning swim
