Lenin memorial in Regla, Havana, Cuba, November 2025
This work by Thelma Marin was installed on Lenin Hill (Colina Lenin) in Regla in 1984, the 60th anniversary of the man’s death. The hill itself, though, was given its name in 1924, the year of his death, and a tree was planted as the first memorial to Lenin outside Soviet Union. It is now one of few that remain.
Now over to all of you. Do come and join us in our Saturday six-word musings.
I’ll admit that many of us openly break the numeric rule and share far more words (all excellent of course!) so the key rule is to have a title of six words – and then create around that the post that you desire! Perhaps in bunches of 6 words if you’re feeling inspired.
To join the challenge, please put a link in your post to the URL of this post. Then come back here and leave us a comment. If you have any problems with linking, just put your own URL into the comment. And do feel free to socialise digitally with the hashtags #SixWordSaturday and #6WS. You’ll find me on Instagram @travel_travel_with_intent and @dsmythphoto

Certainly interesting sculptures. The side of the Hill thing is a bit freaky.

Life is quite dire there now from what I’ve read and what you mention to David. So sad.

Yes, it’s very sad. I can’t imagine any happy outcome.

Interesting sculpture. To be honest, on the small screen of my phone the white figures looked like geese. – No comment.

That is very interesting sculpture display. Are they asking to be spared or asking for help

It is interesting isn’t it. I imagine it’s supposed represent a rally where the crowds are cheering Lenin and trying to touch him. But given what we now know about him your first suggestion seems more appropriate.

Cuba, a very creative source for you. Never visited but it looks like a time capsule

It is just that, David. It holds a history of occupation, escape, occupation, corruption, freedom that was really occupation, revolution, independence, tyranny, poverty, collapse, despair. It also has beauty and kind, résiliant people. My return visit last year was very sad as the situation was far worse than I imagined. And it is even worse now.
I still encourage people to visit (taking items to give some short term help) but they have to accept there will be very frequent power cuts and very little health care and only bicycles or feet for transport.
