Venice Dusk

The sun has gone down, the street lights are coming on and Venice looks as beautiful as ever.

The focus of my trip to Venice last spring was to capture the city at dawn, but with a roof terrace like this I had to stay up one evening to capture dusk.

For anyone else who likes capturing the lights at the extremes of the day, there are a number of apps that can help you plan.  The one I use is Sun Surveyor.

It contains all the detail you could possible want.  If you just want to know the time of sunrise or sunset in your location, you have it.  But if you want to be out there for, say, a specific part of dusk, it can give you that too.

Did you even know there are 3 categories of dusk? – I didn’t

Civil dusk
When the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon in the evening: objects are distinguishable and some stars and planets are visible to the naked eye.
Nautical dusk
When the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon in the evening: objects are no longer distinguishable, and the horizon is not visible to the naked eye.
Astronomical dusk
When the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon in the evening: the sun no longer lights the sky and stars and planets can be viewed without light interference.

  2. Fabulous shot, Debbie! It feels like you have captured the first lantern to lighten up the good old Venice 🙂
PS: I didn’ t know about the dusk categories either – thank you for sharing.
