The sun has gone down, the street lights are coming on and Venice looks as beautiful as ever.
The focus of my trip to Venice last spring was to capture the city at dawn, but with a roof terrace like this I had to stay up one evening to capture dusk.
For anyone else who likes capturing the lights at the extremes of the day, there are a number of apps that can help you plan. The one I use is Sun Surveyor.
It contains all the detail you could possible want. If you just want to know the time of sunrise or sunset in your location, you have it. But if you want to be out there for, say, a specific part of dusk, it can give you that too.
Did you even know there are 3 categories of dusk? – I didn’t
-
Civil dusk
When the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon in the evening: objects are distinguishable and some stars and planets are visible to the naked eye.
Nautical dusk
When the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon in the evening: objects are no longer distinguishable, and the horizon is not visible to the naked eye.
-
Astronomical dusk
When the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon in the evening: the sun no longer lights the sky and stars and planets can be viewed without light interference.
Linked to Thursday Special.
Love the photo, the lighting is perfect. I didn’t know there were apps for that! Thanks for sharing.

I am so glad I made it back for this post – I think I miss some posts because I do these blgo round visits – and well, I need to make sure I do not miss ones like this – I did not know about the different dusks and also this view of Venice makes me really look forward to going in a couple of years. anyhow, hope you are feeling better – not sure if you still have the tissues so close by – but hope all is well. 🙂
Peace

The first. I was so tired from being up at 03:00 that I could barely stay awake! And I’ll admit to a little help from Lightroom 😉

Mine may well be disqualified! It looked darker in real life than it’s come out but I was too tired from all the walking to hang about any longer. 🙂

I know the feeling! I was going to use a Brighton shot until I realised I had escaped the cold beach before the sun had actually set!

That’s interesting about the 3 categories of dusk – puts a new understanding about ‘twilight duration’ at different latitudes

It does. I should have paid more attention in geography classes at school!

I knew about the three categories. This is beautiful, Debbie. Were you on the terrace of the hotel you were staying in?

Can’t help there I’m afraid. I don’t know any other hotels. But do have a wonderful time. Are you planning to be there for Carnival?

No, the idea is to go after to avoid crowds and high prices.
