The once industrial area of Gateshead Quays, underwent renovation in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.  It is now sexy and curvy!

The Sage was the first concert hall to be designed by renowned architects Foster and Partners.  This £70M project opened in 2004.  The striking curved glass and steel building hosts a vast array of predominantly musical artistic performances.  To enjoy the building for yourself, try one of the public tours which take place most days at 11:00, but do phone ahead (0191 443 4661) to check for details.

Opened in November 2000, the Millennium Bridge links the quaysides of Newcastle and Gateshead.  The unique design by Wilkinson Eyre Architects / Gifford & Partners comprises 2 steel arches; one is the deck, the other supports the deck.  Its uniqueness lies in its method of opening: it tilts, turning into one huge arch.  It takes 4 minutes to open and, apparently, its energy efficient design means that it costs just £3.60 per opening.  You will find a list of expected tilting times on the Bridges’s own website.

Between the two, is the BALTIC, not so curvy, but still:

The BALTIC (Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art) is housed in the old Baltic Flour Mill,  built by the Rank Hovis company to a late-1930s design by architects Gelder and Kitchen, completed in 1950 and closed in 1981.  Originally just one of a number of mills located along the banks of the Tyne, it acts as a strong reminder of the former industry of the area.  Now it is a lively arts venue, presenting a wide range of art exhibitions, along with related talks and activities.
