Top Train Journeys

I guess it’s a bit of an age thing, a  sense of time passing and milestones  happening, events not always under my control, that has prompted me to tidy up and refine my Bucket List.

I’ve always had a bit of a hit and miss list of things to do and visit, much of it just in my head.  I have been very lucky, particularly in the last few years, to cross off many of my targets. So now it’s time to update it and add some more.

You might guess that my list is heavily travel biased, with quite a few animals thrown in.  It is also in danger of becoming exceedingly long.  I probably read too many travel blogs and magazines.   So I thought I’d enlist the help of my followers to pick out the best of the bunch.

I am sorting the list into categories of various types and would appreciate your views and recommendations on the top things / activities / places to add or keep on my list.

I’m kicking this off with top train journeys.

Previously on my list were the Shinkansen in Japan and the Flåm Railway in Norway.  Still on my list are  the West Highland Line in Scotland and the Trans Siberian Express, Moscow to Beijing.

Here’s a list of other journeys I’m contemplating adding:

  • Coast Starlight, USA – Los Angeles to Seattle, 3 states in 35 hours;
  • Copper Canyon, Mexico – “El Chepe”, 655km of canyons and peaks;
  • Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, India – the “Toy Train”, pasing India’s highest railway station,  tea plantations and lush rainforests;
  • Eastern & Oriental Express, Bangkok to Singapore – 3 days of colonial travel and impressive views;
  • Hudson Bay train, Winnipeg to Churchill – 1950’s characterful train, 2 nights on board, journey to the back of beyond;
  • Lunatic Line, Kenya – overnight Nairobi to Mombasa;
  • Semmering Railway, Austria – 90 minutes on a a World Heritage site, involving 16 viaducts, 15 tunnels, and more then 100 curved stone bridges;
  • Trans-Siberian Express, Moscow to Beijing – 7 days of intriguing scenery;
  • TranzAlpine coast to coast of New Zealand South Island – 225km of extreme scenery from Christchurch to Greymouth;
  • Venice Simplon Orient-Express, London to Venice – classic romance and glamour (so me!) with Art Deco thrown in.

So opinions and suggestions please.
-Which ones would you do / have you done?
-Am I missing something crucial from my list?
