Mannekens Galore

aDSC09874c

I spotted these colourful little fellas in a shop in Brussels.

They are, of course, multi-coloured versions of the famous Brussels landmark, the Manneken Pis (which translates as Little Man Pee in Marols, a Dutch dialect spoken in Brussels, and is also known in French as le Petit Julien).

The real thing is a small bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain’s basin. It was designed by Hiëronymus Duquesnoy the Elder and erected in the early seventeenth century.

  2. Interesting to learn the history of this little fellow. He is certainly world renowned. We have one on one of our Lake Channes who pees into the channel as you go by in your boat … bet the artist didn’t realize what he was starting 🙂
