Most visitors to Barcelona will recognise and admire this colourful, flowing roof.

It is, of course, the roof of the Mercat Santa Caterina, designed by husband and wife Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, probably known better in British (or Scottish) circles for the Scottish Parliament building.

You can just make out the beautiful Seville-tiled roof from the main square in front of the Cathedral but not everyone makes the slight detour to go inside – and you most certainly should!

The steel and timber frame of the vaulted roof is spectacular, and the wares on display at its one hundred odd stalls are every bit as enticing and interesting as those at the better know Boqueria.

So next time you are in Barcelona, head via the market on your way from the Cathedral to the Picasso Museum, and go inside.  Look up and admire the design and workmanship, and spare a thought for Enric Miralles who sadly died in 2000 and will never get to see what he created here.
