-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 42
Every Thursday, I publish a post containing photo(s) taken from above or below, and invite you to join in the challenge by posting your own photos with an up or down perspective.

For week 42, I’m taking you back to my Istanbul trip from earlier this year.
These stairs, the Camondo Stairs, were photographed back in 1964 by one of my very favourite photographers, the famous black-and-white street photographer Henri Cartier Bresson. For his take on the stairs click here.
Located in the Galata neighborhood of Istanbul, these striking art nouveau stairs were donated to the city by the wealthy Jewish family Camondo.

They climb up from the Bankalar Caddesi (Avenue of the Banks) to a school built by the same family. The stairs are made special by their hexagonal shape, said to have been chosen so that if a child slipped on the steps they wouldn’t fall far. Indeed, they were supposedly built to give the Camondos’ own children a shorter route to school.
