-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 71
Every Thursday, I publish a post containing photo(s) taken from above or below, and invite you to join in the challenge by posting your own photos with an up or down perspective.

This week, we’re looking up at one of Britain’s modern Cathedrals, Southwark, which hides on the South Bank, not far from London Bridge. It is wedged into a hectic part of town, right next to Borough Market and with busy railway lines running overhead, so most of the time you really do need to look up to get a view of it.
When I say modern Cathedral, I mean that it only became a Cathedral in 1905, though the building itself is not modern. There has been a religious structure on this site since the 11th century, with mention of a minster here in the Domesday Book (1086).

It was Southwark Priory from 1106 to 1538, becoming a parish church after the dissolution of the monasteries. The building you see here today has the original Gothic structure, built between 1220 and 1420, at its core although the nave is a late 19th-century reconstruction.
In 1905 the Diocese of Southwark was created and this parish church became a Cathedral. As a matter of interest, there are another 2 cathedrals in Southwark, one catholic and one Greek Orthodox.

Debbie – love the looking up ones for this beautiful post 🙂
and the last image in my fav – with that rugged cross to the right – almost ironic to see that handmade temp kinda cross next this old – well built stone structure – with modern in the middle – quite a shot!
also, the note of the “priory” reminds me of this lawyer we had to get in the 90’s – an out of state guy who ended up going in for a heart transplant a few weeks after we hired him (he was old and was a mess) and well, one memory I have is how for like 20 minutes he wanted to talk about the possible origin of our last name – prior vs. priory – and yawn – and cha-ching – let;s just talk about the case… lol
anyhow, hope you have a nice day!
