The Evening Independent, St Pete’s first daily newspaper, was so proud and so confident of the local climate, that it issued the famous “sunshine offer”. It proclaimed St Pete’s to be the Sunshine City and promised to give away the paper for free on any day the sun did not shine.
This famous offer ran from 1910 until the paper merged with the St Petersburg Times in 1986, and in that time it gave away the paper just 296 times.
This bronze sculpture, Get The News!, by J. Seward Johnson Jr. stands outside the St Petersburg Museum of History. Johnson is known for producing sculptures of people in action and for making pieces that the public can interact with. The bench with its stack of newspapers is a great place to take a break from the heat of the sun or to wait for the segway tours that run from here.
