Love and Betrayal with Hemingway

“It was dangerous to keep my heart on the line with Ernest, but what real choice did I have?… It was like being born over each night, the same process again and again, finding myself, losing myself, finding myself again.”
extract from The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, Virago Press, 2011

Hemingway was a big fan of Venice, writing in 1948 in a letter to Bernard Berenson, “I’m an old Veneto’s fanatic”.  In September of that year, Hemingway and his fourth wife returned to Italy to visit his wartime haunts; the photo above of Hemingway inspecting fish at the Rialto Fish Market is from that visit.

Linked to Friday 56.
