University of the Trees is “is a global participatory network enabling creative initiatives to share their different kinds of knowledge”. This virtual university held some workshops in Berlin earlier this year, so I’m guessing that’s why I came across this rather intriguing sign as I wandered along the Spree.

Interesting but odd. Would have worked for the Oddball Photo Challenge as well.

I looked at the link and don’t have a clear idea what this is. I was puzzled with the term university and social sculpture.

I’m glad everyone else is as confused as me. It kind of makes sense as you read, but then when you finish you realise you are no wiser at all!

Oh I’m not a part of it – I just stumbled across the tree and then googled it!

I understood the sign didn’t have to do with you personally:) What kind of workshops did you hold in Berlin?

Oh, I was there for a conference on cash logistics – attending rather than running anything myself for a change. My main work these days is for a trade association. My travel is sometimes for conferences, sometimes to meet with members, sometimes to meet with politicians or press depending on what issues are happening in different countries and sometimes workshops to advertise what we do and recruit new members.

What an interesting journey this sent me on, although blog links led me into Error. I got glimpses of the ideas behind the University of trees, but I still need something precise to anchor the concept. Terms like “social sculpture network” pique my interest, but what do they look like in practice. I’ll keep exploring.
Your photo is satisfying, at least – that lovely patterning of bark could well be a metaphor for … something!

I’m not much wiser than you. Some of the words sounded good but like you, a need something more concrete to be able to understand. However, the tree itself was very solid and placing a sign like that in the middle of a city is a good way to pique interest.
