Richard Hooker (1554-1600) was an influential Anglican theologian who wrote the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity (1593), in which he argued that it is through our participation in the life of Christ that we experience forgiveness and salvation.
Born in the village of Heavitree, now a suburb of Exeter, his statue stands in front of Exeter Cathedral and he is due to appear on the Exeter Pound £E20 banknote when it is launched on 1 September.

I feel suitably educated, thanks! Now I will be able to greet him by name the next time I see him.
