Sundials, both old and new, pop up over the world, but Austria seems to be particularly fond of them. They have a Sundial Data Bank and the 2000 figures report 3009 dials in the country, with 182 in Salzburg province, 117 of which are twentieth century creations.
The Baroque dial above, with a beautiful painted fresco of the Madonna and Jesus, dates back to 1628.
This aqua and yellow dial, is more modern; 2001 to be precise. It may well be a renovation or be inspired by an older version, but it is certainly the work of Roland and Simon Moroder. I wonder if they are the models for the Gemini zodiac image?
On my visit up to the Festung Hohensalzburg, the castle on top of the hill, there was no sun, so no time telling here, but this fresco brightened the courtyard next to St George’s Chapel. It features attractive images for each of the zodiac signs, plus the Salzburg Coat of Arms.
