Statue of Agustín Lara,  Havana,  December 2016

Ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Lara y Aguirre del Pino (1897 – 1970), known as Agustín Lara,  was a Mexican songwriter.  He wrote over 700 songs in his lifetime and was extremely popular in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Spain.

This statue was donated to Cuba by Veracruz, Lara’s place of birth, in 2000.  It was created by the Mexican sculptor Humberto Peraza Ojeda (1925 – 2016).

A colourful note:  this striking shade appeared in the Crayola crayon boxes in 1992, nameless, as part of the public naming competition.   The winner was the cute name of robin’s  egg  blue.

Crayola crayons are not the first occurrence of this as a colour name; its first recorded use was back in 1873!  It resembles the shade of eggs laid by the American robin (which has a red breast but is not related to the European robin).  The colour is also often referred to as eggshell blue.
