A colourful note:  the scarlet crayon joined the Crayola family in 1998.  It started its life the year before as part of their True Blue Heroes packs, gained the name of Torch Red in 1998 and was changed to scarlet a year or two later.

The name itself was not originally that of a colour, but of a prestigious woollen cloth.  High quality cloths were often coloured with kermes, a red dye respected for its resilience, and from around the 14th century the word scarlet came to mean the colour as well as the cloth.
