And there’s a little hint that we should stand on our head to enjoy this mural: the moniker of the artist is upside down at the bottom of the image. Add Fuel (full name Diogo Machado) is telling us to flip the image.
Now it makes sense. This is Machado’s interpretation of the portrait of King Philip IV of Spain and III of Portugal by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens. He is highlighting the similarities, and differences, between Spanish and Portuguese history and culture: to countries who shared much, including their passion for tiles, but who have developed distinctive differences.
