From Schloss Mirabell to Hohensalzburg Castle,  Salzburg,  May 2018

Mirabell Palace was built around 1606, was rebuilt in was rebuilt in Baroque style in the early 18th century, and owes its current Neoclassical style to a major restoration a century later.  Originally called Altenau Castle, its current name comes from Italian mirabile and bello, meaning wonderful and beautiful.

Towering on the hill beyond, stands the imposing Hohensalzburg Castle.  Originally constructed in 1077, the castle was gradually expanded and modified in the centuries that followed, and underwent significant refurbishment in the late 19th century.  Easy access was provided by the opening of the Festungsbahn funicular railway in 1892, making it a popular tourist destination.
