There are a number of attractive water towns within reach of Shanghai, providing a tempting day-trip or over night trip out of the city.

The pros and cons that will dictate your choice of which one to pick, require you to balance the following to suit your preferences: easy transport from Shanghai; crowd levels; touristy-ness; cost; physical beauty; size; activities.

On my trip to Asia earlier this year, I chose Wuzhen for an overnight stay. I was there out of season and mid-week, so the crowds weren’t too overwhelming. And it’s a beautiful spot (better when the sun shines) with plenty to keep you busy. However, I have to say that prices are high and the food is below average.
Here’s a little selection to give you a feel for the tradition and beauty of the place.

It like that is better here than reality. The atmosphere is a bit Disney. But for photos it was great. I’ll be showing more when I get time but today turned into a mad day.

What a glorious looking place, Debs! 🙂 🙂 Are mosquitos a major pest out there?

Not when I was there. But might be in summer, unless the general pollution kills them all off

Wuzhen looks so nice. Wonder if it gets really crowded when it’s the season?

Yes, dreadful apparently. It was very popular with Chinese families. And as it’s all narrow pathways and very few of them, you wouldn’t be able to escape the crowds.
