Scott Monument at night, January 2019
The lofty Scott Monument towers over Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, celebrating the Scottish novelist, poet, playwright and historian, SirWalter Scott (1771 – 1832), author of classic works including Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and Waverley.
The structure stands 61.11 metres tall, and offers its visitors a series of viewing platforms with panoramic views of the surroundings. Apparently, it is the second largest monument to a writer in the world, after the José Martí Monument in Havana. To reach the highest platform, you have to twirl your way around 288 steps, a clamber still on my to do list.

I wasn’t even tempted to climb the stairs

My family made it all the way up on our trip (though it was so windy I only got halfway). Very narrow and scary, but they told me the view was worth it.
