The answer to my “Where do you think we are?” is Hong Kong.

Jockey Club Innovative Tower,  Hong Kong,  November 2018

The building hiding behind the greenery is the Jockey Club Innovative Tower, home to Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) School of Design, and the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation. Perched on a small island surrounded by busy roads and non-stop traffic, its 15 storeys of curvy lines and angles called and tempted me.

Completed in 2013, it is the design work of Zaha Hadid (1950-2016), one of my favourite architects and known to many as “Queen of the Curve”. Her works feature as must-see sites on many of my trips.

The size, position and tilt of this structure, plus very bright sun, made it hard to capture a meaningful image of the whole structure, so I’ll give you a gallery from various angles so that you can fully enjoy her design work. You’ll also spot a few celebrating youngsters and their families, as I had turned up on graduation day.

  1. My first thought on seeing the photo with the greenery at the bottom was that this was a cruise ship. Framed in this way, it does at first glance look quite similar to many of the white floating monsters we get in Sydney!

  2. I love to see the architecture of Zaha Hadid…mostly in photographs, sadly…you have actually seen quite a few ‘in the flesh’ so to speak
