Textures of age

Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh, August 2019

The Canongate Churchyard provides the resting place of several famous Edinburgers, including the economist Adam Smith and David Rizzio, the murdered private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots. This latter interment may be more rumour than truth, though.

The kirkgate makes for a fascinating wander just off the Royal Mile, with great views across to Calton Hill.

  1. I think I’ve read every biography of Mary, Queen of Scots published in the Twentieth Century- the last being by Antonia Fraser. The murder of Rizzio is one of those incredibly violent episodes in history that makes for great literature and movies, but having to live through that must have left its scars. It’s a miracle that Queen Mary didn’t miscarry immediately after seeing the poor man stabbed to death while clinging to her skirts.
