The Ship of Tolerance is currently bobbing on the Thames, right next to the Millennium Bridge. For those of us viewing to from the South Bank, it has the wonderful London sights of St Paul’s Cathedral and the city skyscrapers hovering behind it.
This 60-foot long, hand-crafted wooden ship was designed by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, two highly respected artists with a reputation for their large-scale installations. The giant, colourful sail is the result of the curated work of school children, refugee groups and cultural organisations. This artistic project was first launched in 2005 in Egypt, has staled into Venice, Havana, Moscow, New York and Rome and is now in London. For this version of the ship, the art is the work of children from forty London primary schools, from Great Ormond Street Hospital and from refugee centres in Birmingham, Leeds, Peterborough and Calais.
It will be on show here on the Thames until Sunday 6 October, but the sail won’t be raised in high wind.

I had seen signs but hen forgotten about it.I went across London by train this morning and saw it as I passed over the Thames – simply had to go back this afternoon 🙂
