Snowy day in North West Iceland, September 2018
Visit Iceland and you fall in love with the place, no matter the weather. I saw sun, rain, wind, snow, ice, mist; and I fell for this stunningly beautiful country.
Sadly, though, the glaciers are shrinking. I knew that, but was shocked to see it highlighted in the Olafur Eliasson exhibits at the Tate Modern this weekend. He took aerial shots of a number of Iceland’s glaciers in 1999, and returned this year to repeat those shots – same place, same time, same angle, same distance. And the difference is all too visible.

Once gone, a glacier does not return.

Sadly taking global warming seriously means accepting that we must ration our flying and can’t visit all the wonderful places that tempt us around the world. Iceland looks a strange and beautiful place. I’m glad to ‘visit’ it in your photos and those other bloggers.

Noteworthy comparison on the glaciers. I just finished reading https://www.laphamsquarterly.org/climate . Dire.

There is no happy news out there on climate. And many of us still aren’t taking it seriously enough

I think ‘taking it seriously’ is one of the biggest battles about this.

I knew of it, but the photos tell the story. I hate the thought of a wonderful world constantly shrinking.
