As I strided along the seafront at Margate on Sunday morning, I was adding layers as I walked – scarf on, hat on, inner gloves on, outer gloves on. The sun was glorious; but the wind was biting, and was oh so skilled at finding gaps in my layers.
Then, in front of me, I spotted people removing their clothes!
And then running to the sea!
And swimming!
Madness!
I watched for a while, in disbelief, but it was too cold to stand still. I left them to it and headed off for a cup of steaming coffee, with Newton’s quote bobbing in my head:
“I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.”

We see the same thing in Maine all the time. I cannot fathom how people go into such a cold C on such a cold days

Indeed! Reminds me of the time when we visited South Africa in winter (no comparison weatherwise, though) and we were the only ones on the beach, except for the life guards – so at least they expected some idiots like us!
