Cryptomeria japonica Yoshino, Kew Gardens, London, June 2021

The Cryptomeria japonica Yoshino is known as the Japanese Cedar or Japanese Redwood in English. In Japanese it has a more descriptive name: Sugi, meaning hair tree.
Its timber is extremely fragrant, weather and insect resistant, and soft and easy to saw. Native to Japan, it has also been extensively cultivated for wood production on the Azores. The one pictured above was in London’s Kew Gardens, in the Japanese garden close to the Chokushi-Mon (Gateway of the Imperial Messenger).
