British Library, London

The building of the new British Library was a massive project, taking over 30 years from initial concept to opening. The architect’s main influences were modernist style, with a few other architects having particular impact on him. I’d be interested to hear what and where this building makes you think of. To me, the tower in particular takes me to another country.

The architect had a lot to do – safe housing of all the books, and readers, and also a striking building that could sit next to the Gilbert Scott hotel next door. Hence the colour and lines

I’m a bit like that, Zelda. But this building was a massive contrast to the old library. It used to be in the British Museum.
But I have grown to like this modernist structure. And inside it has great reading rooms, plenty of space to work and runs some good events.
