We have one (or rather, two) celebrations before that. 11 November in Germany is Sankt Martin – when it gets dark children walk with lanterns and sing songs to the saint who divided his coat with a poor man on a cold night. For others the date is important because at exactly 11.11 am the fifth season begins, i.e. carnival kicks off (it quietens down during advent and Christmas publicly but behind the scenes the “professionals” are hard at work).
