Diptychs

I love pairing photos to create a diptych – it can be fun to find the matches and differences that can unite two images. Here are just a few of my favourites.

Curves in the British Library, London

Scotland meets Sicily

Mother & Child, St Paul’s Cathedral, London

Earlier this year there was an excellent exhibition of Joel Meyerowitz images shown in pairs. It was fascinating to see how well such differing images looked when hung with another – they enhanced each other, supporting the title of “Dialogues” that had been given to the exhibition.
I’m sharing one example below, but you can see more on the website of Huxley-Parlour Gallery.

  1. Love your pairings, especially the architecture ones which can be quite tricky. The first one which leads you on a flowing path in, around and out, and the second which steps up and then back down the other side. The way modern art can create an abstract mother and child out of stone, and the other piece which appears to be both a cross and an updated version of a triptych, and portrays a more traditional painting of a mother and child. Or is a modern art mirror in a cathedral? It really intrigues me. You are obviously experienced at diptychs – I love the way each pair surprises one.

    • Ah yes, the last one is a sculpture called Mother & Child by Henry Moore. The triptych on the right is a video that was showing close to the sculpture. I loved the way it reflected the mother and child theme, and the sculpture is reflected in the panel to the left. The reflection was a surprise when I reviewed my photos.

  2. Clever pairings Debbie – I especially like the symmetry in the British Library pair! And thanks for the link to view more of Meyerowitz’s work, I really liked what I saw and would have enjoyed that exhibition I’m sure.
