I fell in love with these iron knockers on the doors of Tarragona Cathedral. The doors are covered in iron, and these knockers make the perfect finishing touch to this ancient handiwork.
W.W.Collins wrote about these very knockers in 1909 in his book “Cathedral Cities of Spain”:
“The two doorways on either side of the façade are pure Romanesque. Each is surmounted by a small wheel window. The iron work which covers the doors is of a very intricate design; and the huge iron knockers with grotesque heads, the hinges of the doors, and the copper work as well, gave me many pleasant moments in marvelling at the skill of the smiths of days gone by.”
This is posted as part of the White Rabbit monthly photo challenge. This month’s theme is knobs and knockers.
One of the best parts of this challenge is that all participants are asked to recommend 2 blogs that they have enjoyed in the last month. My recommendations this month are both expat bloggers sharing their experiences in their adopted countries. I envy them a little and admire them hugely:
Janaline at JanalinesWorldJourney – Janaline has lived in several countries and is currently in Chile. Do check out her fascinating posts.
The Lady of the Cakes for her tales of expat life in Spain. Great read, great photos.

Reblogged this on The Legion of Door Whores and commented:

Gorgeous photos, Debbie. No wonder you fell in love with these particular knockers, they are a work of art. So glad you shared them.
Thanks for sharing links to two blogs you enjoy. I know the Lady of the Cakes very well, but I’ll HOP over to your other suggestion right away.
Great entry for this month’s challenge, well done!

I rely on you for cake pics. Spain is not good for cakes. That’s its major drawback 😦

Yes, you’re right. I hadn’t really thought of that. I don’t stay in Spain long enough to get withdrawal symptoms.

Santa Maria de Tarragona has an impressive main entrance. I was just going over my Tarragona images and realized I never got up close to this door. Thank you for sharing these. I really wanted to see the details on these doors.
