It is hard to compare Formula One champions across the years, due to the constantly changing technology. However, Juan Manuel Fangio (June 24, 1911 – July 17, 1995) is undoubtedly one of the greatest.
He won five F1 World Driver’s Championships — a record which stood for 46 years until eventually beaten by Michael Schumacher took a 6th title in 2003 — with four different teams (Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Maserati), an achievement that has not been repeated.
There are several statues of Fangio, sculpted by Catalan artist Joaquim Ros Sabaté, at various race venues, including the one featured above in Monaco.
