I is for… Ironwork

Iron.  To me, the word sounds heavy, dark and cumbersome.  Yet, used as a decorative feature, the product itself can be beautiful.

I have a particular penchant for iron architectural details, especially the iron staircases that hang so strikingly on the outside of buildings in Manhattan.

The dark iron contrasts against the more delicate brickwork, and shadows enhance the overall image.

And it’s not just New York that has these beautiful staircases.  The following photos are from Manchester, England.

  1. Iron work has always had my interest, and you have taken very interesting angles of the stairs. I especially like the ones with the red buildings as background!

  2. I love ironwork! I rarely pursue themes when taking photos, but while living in Paris I was absolutely obsessed with ironwork, particularly of the tiny flower balconies.
