This is Hermanus; it was originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but thankfully for slow-typing bloggers, the name was shortened as it was also too long for the postal service!
This beautiful spot in the Western Cape of South Africa, is one of the few places where you can whale watch from land. To help you spot the Southern Right whales, Hermanus has the world’s only Whale Crier who carries sighting information on his back and sounds his horn to announce a sighting.
I had been whale watching previously, in the Azores, and although it was a fun trip and the dolphins were beautiful, there was a distinct lack of whales. Nor was I lucky enough to spot any from the cliffs of Hermanus.
Undeterred, however, I set out on another whale watching trip here. And success! My perseverance was rewarded.

Most tourists of Hermanus are directed to the waterfront near the town centre where you can also find the hooting whale crier. The best whale watching spots in Hermanus however are ‘Kraal rock’ and siewers point’ a 3-4 kilometer drive from there in the direction of Stanford. And since driving into that direction, after another 30 kilometers you will find ‘Die Kelders’ and that is also a spot where you can easily picture whales (close ups!!!) from the ‘side-line’. No whale watching boat ride needed… 😉

The best whale watching spot in Hermanus is Siewers Point. We’re amazed and surprised that the Whalecrier does not mention this spot on his board. Siewers Point is the spot where Whale Whisperer and Wildlife Photographer Dave de Beer took all the pictures for his new book … Pictures of whales as you have never seen before.

This is awesome. I have never seen whales. Maybe one day it will happen. Sometimes they come near the coast here or even into the bay in Wellington

That sounds promising. Best carry binoculars in case you’re lucky!

This is priceless! Never have I heard of a whale crier. So much more fun than a town crier, though not so keen on the outfit. Wonderful whale shot, Debbie. 🙂

Fantastic! I went whale watching once, off the coast of Boston, but without a camera. Which was just as well, as right at the very moment when I stuck my head over the railings, a hump back came up, completely covering me with snot from his blowhole, and that stuff is (apparently) corrosive.

At least that made it so memorable you didn’t need a camera!
