The Attendant

Ever been to an underground coffee shop?

Not that unusual, I know.

How about in a former public toilet?

Not so common!

But that’s exactly what you’ll find at The Attendant in Foley Street, London.

This addition to the fast-growing London coffee scene opened this year, and is already proving popular.  It sells the well-respected and tasty Caravan coffee, which is roasted in small batches at roasteries in Exmouth Market and Kings Cross, accompanied by milk from a small producer in Somerset.  The coffee is supplemented by a selection of cold drinks, cakes, sandwiches, soups and salads.

The conveniences were built in around 1890 and closed in the 1960s.   Now lovingly restored, the old Attendant’s office has been turned into a small kitchen and the original porcelain urinals have been converted into a line of high tables with green stools to match the original Victorian floor tiles.  A few other toilet-related items complete the decor.

.
All in all, this fun coffee shop is a great place to take a comfort break if you like tasty coffee.  The service is friendly and knowledgeable, the interior is bright and fun, and the place is conveniently located a stone’s throw from Oxford Circus.

  1. How … subversive 😉 I’m sure they never run out of rolls. Oh, the potential for puns….!
There’s also an underground coffee shop beneath St Martin in the Fields. I’m sure you know that one.
