African Fish Eagle

aDSC05103

The striking black and white of the African Fish Eagle is a common sight and sound in the trees of the Okavango Delta.

It is an afrotropical species that nests in tall trees close to water, preferably calm water such as lake or swamp.  Their prey is primarily fish, but they will also eat small birds and even crocodile hatchlings if the fish supply is low.  Juveniles will feed on carrion and have been seen eating mammal carcasses alongside vultures and Tawny Eagles.

These birds are efficient hunters and can get away with hunting for as little as ten minutes a day.  What a contrast to the elephant who spends most of his day eating.

  1. HI That is a beautiful bird my daughter and family have just moved to Malawi and although they are not bird watchers, yesterday they said they saw a Fish Eagle so I am hoping to visit them and see one.

    • Malawi is on my to do list so I hope you get to visit them soon. It is hard to visit Africa without becoming a bird watcher. I’m sure you’ll soon get reports of more incredible sightings.
