I won’t deny it – I do enjoy shopping. And Sitges is a great place to indulge my habit; there is an impressive selection of independent shops providing plenty of clothes and shoe inspiration.
What I didn’t know until recently, though, is that Sitges is famous for its shoe industry. It opened its first shoe factory -the Tarrida factory – in 1874, and by 1910 it boasted four. By 1936, it had more than 20 factories employing more than 75% of the population.
The sculpture featured here was erected in April 2007 to commemorate Sitges’ involvement in that industry.
