The wall-to-wall information on the worldwide web tells me that today, 15 August, is National Relaxation Day.
Its origins are unclear: one source tells me that it was established around twenty years ago to boost the leisure industry and promote well-being generally. Another more quirky story, though, is that it originated in Britain under the title National Slacker Day, in 2001 or 2002.
In some countries, today is a holiday for Assumption. A fortuitous comment by my blogging friend Ytaba pointed out that the Italians are celebrating Ferragosto today. This led to yet more googling and I wonder if this Augustus’ Rest Day may be the origins of relaxation day; or maybe it was the ancient Roman festival of Vinalia, a holiday to relax after the heavy labours of harvest, that provided the real inspiration.
Whatever the source of this national day, there’s no denying a spot of relaxation is a good thing so do take a moment to chill and put your feet up for a while. The guy below certainly did – probably relaxing after the labours of a heavy lunch!
If further help or encouragement is required:

Love the shot. But for me, no amount of feet up on the desk will do. Both my desktop and laptop computers are acting up and it’s been very frustrating. A few drinks tonight will be in order.

I find a good blow with the fist can work wonders – and then a few drinks! Good luck

We are celebrating Assumption Day in Croatia, but the fact that it is National Relaxation Day is new to me. Since we are not working today I think I will celebrate it properly. 😀 The second I saw your photo I thought Venice – NICE!! Thank you very much Debbie for contributing. Wishing you a relaxing day too 🙂 🙂

Ah, I just looked that up. I knew it was Assumption day today,
but didn’t know it’s likely origins.
Maybe this is why this date was chosen for National Relaxation Day.
Buon Ferragosto to you!
