Cordoba and the City of london

aDSC06493c

This sculpture of a cordwainer stands in the Ward of Cordwainer in the City of London, the area known for its shoe making back in the Middle Ages.  The finest leather was imported from Cordoba in Spain, and this led not just to good shoes, but to the coining of the name for both the area and the trade.

The bronze statue is the work of Alma Boyes.  It was unveiled in 2002 in Bow Churchyardbut now stands just outside St Mary Aldermary Church on Watling Street, a short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral.
