Hemingway was a big fan of Venice, writing in 1948 in a letter to Bernard Berenson, “I’m an old Veneto’s fanatic”. In September of that year, Hemingway and his fourth wife returned to Italy to visit his wartime haunts; the photo above of Hemingway inspecting fish at the Rialto Fish Market is from that visit.

Sounds like Hemingway was a hard person to befriend. I agree with Laura on the writing, it does seem very lovely.
